Archival records reveal that communities contested mining displacements, yet this social negotiation over mining is relatively absent in current interpretative discourse. Instead, state agencies have reimagined the mining landscape, filling former mines with trout and removing much of the built environment in an effort to promote a recreational landscape atop a postindustrial one. During this time, &nbsp;I had the good fortune to spend the majority of my summers conducting archaeological field work in historic gold mining claims just north of Fairbanks, Alaska. This work was part of my MS in&nbsp;Industrial Archaeology at Michigan Tech (you can find my thesis <a href="https://www.academia.edu/2711619/The_Technology_Mining_Methods_and_Landscapes_of_a_Placer_Mining_District_in_Fairbanks_AK_1900-1930" target="_blank">here</a>).&nbsp;Rather than just presenting a photo essay of some of the mine sites we recorded, I thought it could be educational, and maybe fun, to show some snippets of how an industrial archaeologist records a complex standing stamp mill. Specifically, I hope&nbsp;this post breaks down the process of documenting a multi-story industrial&nbsp;facility, and next, how these data can be used to reconstruct how that technological system functioned.</font></div>  <div><div class="wsite-image wsite-image-border-thin wsite-image-border-black" style="padding-top:10px;padding-bottom:10px;margin-left:0px;margin-right:0px;text-align:center"> <a> <img src="https://www.industriallandscapes.org/uploads/5/9/8/8/59888373/p6080114_orig.jpg" alt="Picture" style="width:auto;max-width:100%" /> </a> <div style="display:block;font-size:90%">The Hi-Yu Stamp Mill, which processed lode gold in the Fairbanks Creek area. </div> </div></div>  <div>  <!--BLOG_SUMMARY_END--></div>  <div class="paragraph"><font color="#2a2a2a">Prior to entering Michigan Tech's Industrial Archaeology program, and subsequently working in Fairbanks, I was gainfully employed as an archaeologist with the United States Forest Service - a life changing activity that I often look back on fondly.<br /><br />&#8203;During this time I documented a variety of archaeological sites, ranging from pre-contact settlements in Arizona and New Mexico, to logging camps in Idaho's Clearwater National Forest, and railroading camps throughout California.&nbsp;<br /><br />I also encountered historic mining sites, first in Alaska's Chugach National Forest, but then others in places such as the Black Hills National Forest in South Dakota, the Lassen National Forest in California, and New Mexico's Gila National Forest. Although all of these mining sites were obviously different, when you encounter a lot of them you begin to understand how each of them are also very similar. All historic mining sites contain some arrangement of similar features. These can be physical remains, such as can dumps, broken equipment, or collapsed structures, as well as broader landscape features which are generally dominated by signs of p<span>rospecting, such as trenches, waste rock piles, and a ridiculous&nbsp;abundance of surface prospecting pits.<br /><br />These shallow holes represent attempts by miners in the&nbsp;past to understand the location, depth, and content of the ore&nbsp;body that they wished to extract. Although prospecting pits are fairly unremarkable in the field, after&nbsp;being recorded with a GPS unit and mapped across space, these features show the defined patterns of mineral exploration, reflecting the miner's remarkable understanding of geology as well as the human effort expended to&nbsp;</span>retrieve value.&nbsp;</font></div>  <div><div class="wsite-image wsite-image-border-thin wsite-image-border-black" style="padding-top:10px;padding-bottom:10px;margin-left:0px;margin-right:0px;text-align:center"> <a> <img src="https://www.industriallandscapes.org/uploads/5/9/8/8/59888373/alaska-final_orig.jpg" alt="Picture" style="width:auto;max-width:100%" /> </a> <div style="display:block;font-size:90%">Overview map of the Fairbanks Mining District (John Baeten, 2012)</div> </div></div>  <div class="paragraph" style="text-align:right;"><strong><em><font size="6">"Another goddam prospecting pit!"</font></em>&nbsp;<br />A statement frequently uttered by archaeologists surveying mining landscapes&nbsp;</strong></div>  <div class="paragraph"><font color="#2a2a2a">Although I realize now I'm waxing poetic about the merits of prospecting pits, when you encounter hundreds of these within a single mining site, you can begin to realize how&nbsp;tedious some mining sites can be for an archaeologist. Each prospecting pit requires documentation, consisting of photographing, measuring, and recording its location in a GPS unit, processes that take up quite a lot of time. Taking this into account, the frustration voiced above by numerous nameless co-workers, and possibly myself, becomes readily apparent.&nbsp;<br /><br /><strong><font size="4">Contrasting from the resentment often voiced regarding the sheer quantity of prospecting pits in an historic mine site, I've yet to hear an archaeologist complain about encountering a stamp mill.</font></strong><br /><br />Stamp mills are industrial facilities used to disassemble ore.&nbsp;<span>Using mechanical processes, entailing the&nbsp;sorting of ore by size, reducing the size of this ore in both jaw crushers and within stamp batteries, and finally classifying the crushed ore on apron tables, the stamp milling process essentially&nbsp;</span>separates value from waste.<br />&#8203;<br />&#8203;This leads me to the Hi-Yu Stamp Mill in Fairbanks, the second milling facility I had the opportunity to record as an archaeologist, and by far the most well-preserved.&nbsp;</font></div>  <div><div class="wsite-image wsite-image-border-thin wsite-image-border-black" style="padding-top:10px;padding-bottom:10px;margin-left:0px;margin-right:0px;text-align:center"> <a> <img src="https://www.industriallandscapes.org/uploads/5/9/8/8/59888373/p6080167_orig.jpg" alt="Picture" style="width:auto;max-width:100%" /> </a> <div style="display:block;font-size:90%">The author outside the Hi-Yu Stamp Mill (2011) </div> </div></div>  <div class="paragraph"><font color="#2a2a2a">Documenting a stamp mill is a daunting, and sometimes intimidating task.<br /><br />&#8203;<span>The basic purpose of an archaeological recording is to identify what artifacts exist at a site, to document their condition, and finally where they are located in space. Archaeological recording can occur both at the sub-meter scale, as well as at the broader landscape scale - often used when documenting mine sites due to their vast size.<br />&nbsp;<br />&#8203;</span>When still standing, stamp mills are cavernous facilities, consisting of multiple rooms filled with various machines, structural debris, and other ephemera - all in different stages of duress. Making matters more complicated, stamp mills are usually multi-story facilities, and accessing some of the upper reaches can be both challenging and dangerous. Paul is an associate professor at the&nbsp;University of Alaska Anchorage, and also a talented artist - skilled at producing axonometric drawings of historic ore processing facilities (you can buy&nbsp;his new book <a href="http://upf.com/book.asp?id=9780813054551" target="_blank">here</a>). Axonometric reconstructions are three-dimensional renderings commonly used in engineering to depict all sides of an object from an angle (see above).<br /><br />In&nbsp;order to produce these&nbsp;axonometric drawings, you need to record not just the length and width of an object, but also its depth or height - essentially the X,Y, and Z. These measurements are then drawn on&nbsp;</font><span style="color:rgb(34, 34, 34)">axonometric graph paper (see above).&nbsp;</span><br /><br /><span style="color:rgb(42, 42, 42)">We wanted to take this idea, but apply it to the entire Hi-Yu stamp mill - that is measure all of the equipment within the facility, along with its rooms, walls, and staircases, in order to reconstruct what the Hi-Yu might have looked like years ago.&nbsp;</span><span>&#8203;&#8203;</span><font color="#2a2a2a">&nbsp;</font><br /><br /><span style="color:rgb(42, 42, 42)">To understand the technological process employed at&nbsp;this stamp mill, I will take you through the steps (or the flow sheet) that the ore traveled as it was reduced in size, and disassembled into value and waste.</span></div>  <div><div class="wsite-image wsite-image-border-thin wsite-image-border-black" style="padding-top:10px;padding-bottom:10px;margin-left:0px;margin-right:0px;text-align:center"> <a> <img src="https://www.industriallandscapes.org/uploads/5/9/8/8/59888373/p6201898_orig.jpg" alt="Picture" style="width:auto;max-width:100%" /> </a> <div style="display:block;font-size:90%">The entrance to the crushing level of the stamp mill. We needed to use a ladder to enter the floor where the jaw crusher is located, since the original staircase was not usable. The slumping trestle above and to the right of the ladder is where ore entered the stamp mill from the nearby ore bin.  </div> </div></div>  <div class="paragraph"><br /><font color="#2a2a2a">The first step in ore processing is getting the material to the stamp mill itself. In the above image you can see the slightly dilapidated trestle that was used to bring ore into the stamp mill. This ore was stored in an adjacent ore bin, and would have traveled by rail over the trestle and then dumped into the stamp mill.<br /><br />A&nbsp;general rule in stamp milling, is that the first step almost always occurs at the top level of the facility. Doing so, provided the mill workers with the use of a free source of energy - <strong><font size="4">gravity</font></strong>&nbsp;- to help move the ore through the facility.&nbsp;</font></div>  <div><div class="wsite-image wsite-image-border-thin wsite-image-border-black" style="padding-top:10px;padding-bottom:10px;margin-left:0px;margin-right:0px;text-align:center"> <a> <img src="https://www.industriallandscapes.org/uploads/5/9/8/8/59888373/p6200158_orig.jpg" alt="Picture" style="width:auto;max-width:100%" /> </a> <div style="display:block;font-size:90%">Inside the top room of the stamp mill, showing the grizzly. The light at the top of the grizzly is where the ore would have entered the mill from the trestle.</div> </div></div>  <div class="paragraph"><font color="#2a2a2a">When ore entered the stamp mill it immediately fell onto a simple technology known as a grizzly (pictured above). The grizzly was the first technology used in the ore dressing process. Consisting of only a simple series of bars, the grizzly allows chunks of ore below a certain size to fall directly into the stamp batteries below, while larger chunks of rock are picked off the grizzly by hand, and tossed into an adjacent jaw crusher.&nbsp;</font></div>  <div><div class="wsite-image wsite-image-border-thin wsite-image-border-black" style="padding-top:10px;padding-bottom:10px;margin-left:0px;margin-right:0px;text-align:center"> <a> <img src="https://www.industriallandscapes.org/uploads/5/9/8/8/59888373/doc04467520140103111218-page-3_orig.jpg" alt="Picture" style="width:auto;max-width:100%" /> </a> <div style="display:block;font-size:90%">These are measured drawings of the grizzly located on the top floor of the stamp mill. </div> </div></div>  <div class="paragraph"><font color="#2a2a2a">The material picked off of the grizzly was deemed too large to be sent directly to stamp batteries, and needed to be reduced in size by a jaw crusher. As the 's' shaped cams come into contact with the flat bottomed tappers, the stamp stems are lifted a little less than a foot. This was one of the more complicated pieces of equipment due to the number of its components. </div> </div></div>  <div class="paragraph"><font color="#2a2a2a"><span>Prior to the development of the automated ore feeder, a worker was responsible for feeding chunks of ore into the stamp battery directly.&nbsp; This human-fed stamp mill was under constant duress from the irregular feeding of the worker; the battery was either overfilled or neglected, causing the heads to smash against too much ore, or against the exposed die, bending the stems and creating periods of inoperability. The Hendy Challenge ore feeder helped alleviate this problem. Measured drawings can help illustrate some of the details that photography might fail to capture. </div> </div></div>  <div class="paragraph"><span><font color="#2a2a2a">Each of the stamp batteries in the Hi-Yu were equipped with mortar boxes made by the </font></span><span style="color:rgb(42, 42, 42)">Joshua Hendy Iron Works of San Francisco</span><span><font color="#2a2a2a">. I'm not sure if the time-lapse serves any beneficial purpose. My initial thought was that this could portray how archaeologists move through a building when they are documenting it -&nbsp;basically showing the recording process.</font><br /><br /><font color="#2a2a2a">In the video, you will see Paul&nbsp;White and myself spending a Saturday within the confines of the Hi-Yu. The first half of the video is the&nbsp;recording of the apron tables and some of the stamp batteries, while the&nbsp;second half features&nbsp;the engine room - which I decided not to describe at length in this post. What I've seen during these lunch-time inquiries is that these physical artifacts, also contain geographic artifacts left over from past cartography - and <strong>I'd be willing to guess, that I might be one of the first archaeologists to identify an intriguing artifact while waiting for their soup to cook in a Haier microwave</strong>.<br />&#8203;<br />But I digress.&nbsp;</div>  <div><div class="wsite-image wsite-image-border-thin wsite-image-border-black" style="padding-top:10px;padding-bottom:10px;margin-left:0px;margin-right:0px;text-align:center"> <a> <img src="https://www.industriallandscapes.org/uploads/5/9/8/8/59888373/img-2917_orig.jpg" alt="Picture" style="width:auto;max-width:100%" /> </a> <div style="display:block;font-size:90%">Raised Relief Map of Wisconsin, published by the Aero Service Corporation (1955)</div> </div></div>  <div class="paragraph"><span>One of these maps is of Wisconsin, which includes the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, home to Michigan Tech, and the Arrowhead area of Northern Minnesota, home to the Mesabi Iron Range. Owing to Wisconsin's relative flatness, this 1955 map uses a raised relief at a 20X vertical&nbsp;exaggeration, which allows for points like Timms Hill (the State's highest "peak") to stand out a little more. <br />&#8203;Since my research has been focused on the Mesabi Range, my eyes have tended to focus on the landscape of Northern St. Louis County.</span></div>  <div><div class="wsite-image wsite-image-border-thin wsite-image-border-black" style="padding-top:10px;padding-bottom:10px;margin-left:0px;margin-right:0px;text-align:center"> <a> <img src="https://www.industriallandscapes.org/uploads/5/9/8/8/59888373/editor/img-2809.jpeg?1512489479" alt="Picture" style="width:auto;max-width:100%" /> </a> <div style="display:block;font-size:90%">Overview of the Arrowhead region of Northern Minnesota, as seen on the Aero Service Corp. map (1955)</div> </div></div>  <div class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">A primary objective of archaeological inquiry is looking for artifacts or cultural features that might signify past human activity on the landscape. Maps, like landscapes, &nbsp;also contain artifacts,just not the physical tools that normally inspire archaeological investigation. &nbsp;</div>  <div class="paragraph"><span><strong>In my work as an archaeologist and environmental historian, I've come across a lot of these cartographic artifacts when looking over maps - namely, phantom cabins, fire towers, roads, fences, water tanks, and towns - features that persist on maps decades after they were burned down, closed, or removed from the landscape.</strong><br />&#8203;<br />However, the cartographic artifacts that I've become&nbsp;accustomed to, are tied together by their cultural origin.&nbsp;</span><span>And that is partially why the artifact I found on the 1955 Aero Service Corp. relief map of Wisconsin so intriguing - because it was not a ghost town, such as Elcor, MN - but instead, this artifact just happened to be a lake.</span></div>  <div><div class="wsite-image wsite-image-border-thin wsite-image-border-black" style="padding-top:10px;padding-bottom:10px;margin-left:0px;margin-right:0px;text-align:center"> <a> <img src="https://www.industriallandscapes.org/uploads/5/9/8/8/59888373/img-2810_orig.jpg" alt="Picture" style="width:auto;max-width:100%" /> </a> <div style="display:block;font-size:90%">Close-up of the Mesabi Range - and the suspicious water body of Carson Lake located just northwest of Hibbing, and under the "I" of "MESABI"</div> </div></div>  <div class="paragraph" style="text-align:right;"><strong><font size="5">In 1955, Carson Lake did not exist</font></strong></div>  <div class="paragraph"><strong>The Carson Lake shown on this 1955 map is an artifact - in fact it hadn't existed for more than three decades.&nbsp;</strong><span>Once the largest body of water located within a 5 mile radius of the Mesabi Range's largest community, Hibbing, Carson Lake had been effectively removed from the landscape over a two-year period from 1917-1919. During this time, the Oliver Iron Mining Company, who had located iron ore underneath the lake years earlier, secured permits from the State of Minnesota to mine underneath the lakebed.&nbsp;</span>&#8203;</div>  <div class="paragraph" style="text-align:right;"><em><font size="4">&nbsp;"Carson Lake property, near Hibbing, Minn., which was diamond drilled through the ice years ago, and later drained and then filled with overburden from the Kerr mine stripping operations, will now be developed and put on producing basis as soon as possible...Considerable trouble is anticipated due to unusual location of the ore body. "</font><font size="1">1</font></em></div>  <div class="paragraph"><span>In my upcoming article in&nbsp;</span><a href="http://cotjournal.com" target="_blank">Change Over Time</a><span>, "</span><strong><em>Contested Landscapes of Displacement: Oliver Iron and the Hibbing Mining District</em></strong><span>," I provide an overview of the promotion (featuring cross-section models displayed at the Minnesota State Fair), development, and ultimate failure of the Carson Lake mine - an industrial endeavor that&nbsp;operated&nbsp;for less than one year, but still managed to remove a lake from the landscape.&nbsp;</span></div>  <div><div class="wsite-image wsite-image-border-thin wsite-image-border-black" style="padding-top:10px;padding-bottom:10px;margin-left:0px;margin-right:0px;text-align:right"> <a> <img src="https://www.industriallandscapes.org/uploads/5/9/8/8/59888373/1951_orig.png" alt="Picture" style="width:auto;max-width:100%" /> </a> <div style="display:block;font-size:90%">Carson Lake - 1951 USGS Topo Map - Note the community of Carson Lake, and the disjointed lakes - waterbodies which hadn't existed for 3 decades.</div> </div></div>  <div class="paragraph">The <span>cartographers from the&nbsp;</span>Aero Service Corp. who designed the map of Wisconsin in 1955 weren't alone in their depiction of this phantom waterbody. Examining the 1951 USGS topographic map shown above,&nbsp;<span>Carson Lake, and its namesake community (outlined in red) also appear.<br /><br />&#8203;This inclusion inspires some questions: Is it possible that water might have re-entered the former lakebed over the 30-year period since the Carson Lake mine was closed, and this is what was captured on these maps? Or could it be a mapping oversight, where the cartographers were possibly relying on an older map to re-draw the area?&nbsp;</span></div>  <div class="paragraph"><span>Six years later, the 1951 TOPO map was revised, and in this iteration, the Carson Lake waterbody and community were removed (as a side note- by this time&nbsp;</span>the community had been displaced by the newly opened &nbsp;Carmi-Carson Lake open-pit mine)<span>. </span><strong>Cartographers revise maps in order to adjust for landscape changes, and to help capture the currentness of a specific space and place.&nbsp;</strong><span>When I started this post, I didn't foresee myself conducting a cursory examination of the process involved in topographic map revisions, but the historical processes used by the USGS is a truly interesting subject. </span><span>According to this&nbsp;</span><a href="https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/2000/of00-325/moore.html" target="_blank">linked</a><span>&nbsp;article by Larry Moore of the USGS, topographic maps underwent four main types of map revisions: minor, basic, complete and single edition.</span></div>  <div><div class="wsite-image wsite-image-border-thin wsite-image-border-black" style="padding-top:10px;padding-bottom:10px;margin-left:0px;margin-right:0px;text-align:right"> <a> <img src="https://www.industriallandscapes.org/uploads/5/9/8/8/59888373/1957_orig.png" alt="Picture" style="width:auto;max-width:100%" /> </a> <div style="display:block;font-size:90%">Carson Lake region - 1957 USGS Top Map. Note that now the lake has been accurately removed from the map, and the community has also been relocated south to the Kelly Lake region.</div> </div></div>  <div class="paragraph">From what I see on the 1957 revision, this map likely underwent a basic revision - meaning that USGS cartographers addressed known errors within the 1951 map, and then used geospatial materials available to them in 1957, such as aerial imagery, to attempt to make the revised landscape as accurate as possible.<font size="1"><em>2</em></font>&nbsp;&nbsp;<br /><br />Geographer Mark Monmonier has written extensively about the cultural decisions that go into maps - both&nbsp;in terms of the changing<a href="https://books.google.com/books?id=8DyZWTwkfF0C&amp;printsec=frontcover&amp;dq=from+squaw+tit+to&amp;hl=en&amp;sa=X&amp;ved=0ahUKEwiNq4GqsPPXAhVD5YMKHYsdDIcQ6AEIJjAA#v=onepage&amp;q=from%20squaw%20tit%20to&amp;f=false" target="_blank">&nbsp;place names</a>&nbsp;assigned to geographic features, as well as how these models of space and place reflect human agency, and can be used as <a href="https://books.google.com/books/about/How_to_Lie_with_Maps.html?id=7BSoQgAACAAJ&amp;hl=en" target="_blank">tools</a> to either promote or undermine certain landscapes.<br /><br />While I do not think that there was any nefarious motive behind the depiction of Carson Lake on these maps - it shows how these models of reality can perpetuate geographic distortions, as well as&nbsp;how little we might actually know about the landscapes in which we live &nbsp;or study. &nbsp; &nbsp;</div>  <div class="paragraph"><strong>But what I find most intriguing</strong> about Carson Lake appearing on these maps decades after it was dewatered, mined, and eventually filled with mine waste - <strong>is thinking about how people in the past might have responded to seeing this feature on a map</strong>? What would have Mesabi Range residents, and particularly those living in Hibbing, thought if they had seen this phantom waterbody on the map? Consequently, the story that industrial heritage managers tell about post-mining landscapes often revolves around the interpretation of only a select few buildings and machines. These reclamation efforts obscure many visible signs of mining, while presenting a landscape to the public that has been seemingly re-naturalized. Yet, reclamation often functions like a band-aid on a tumor, as immediate physical hazards are prioritized for remediation while the more widespread contamination is often left unaddressed.&nbsp;</span><br />&#8203;In Minnesota&rsquo;s Mesabi Iron Range, the post-mining landscape tells a story of state-driven heritage strategies and reclamation efforts aimed at rebranding the range as a recreational rather than deindustrialized landscape. Located in Northern Minnesota, and extending for nearly 100-miles, the Mesabi Range was North America&rsquo;s most productive iron range. From 1890 to today, more than 400 mines operated on the Mesabi Range removing over 3.8-billion tons of iron ore, the majority of which was extracted from highly efficient open-pit mining methods. Open-pit mining produces massive landscape transformations, evident in piles of mine waste along with deep surface chasms, impacts that persist long after a mine ceases production. During the late 1960s to 1970s, the Mesabi Range witnessed an increase in open-pit mine closure and abandonment, which accelerated the Range&rsquo;s transformation from an active to a post-mining landscape, reflective of the economic, social, and environmental consequences of an industry based on a finite resource.&nbsp;<br /></div>  <div><div class="wsite-image wsite-image-border-none " style="padding-top:10px;padding-bottom:10px;margin-left:0px;margin-right:0px;text-align:right"> <a> <img src="https://www.industriallandscapes.org/uploads/5/9/8/8/59888373/screen-shot-2017-08-25-at-3-49-52-pm_orig.png" alt="Picture" style="width:auto;max-width:100%" /> </a> <div style="display:block;font-size:90%">A question posed by Ray Svatos, a Minnesota mineland reclamation specialist</div> </div></div>  <div class="paragraph">&#8203;Beginning in the 1970s, state land managers and local communities began to grapple with how to reckon the landscape transformations that accompanied mine land closure and abandonment. Realizing that the Mesabi Range was entering a post-mining epoch, state personnel began to develop strategies to reimagine and rebrand the Mesabi as something more than a post-mining landscape, by promoting the Mesabi Range as a recreational destination cushioned with a rich and ongoing mining history. This process included the reclamation of the post-mining landscape, consisting of the revegetation of mine waste piles, and the removal of derelict buildings. Steps were also taken to bolster the Range&rsquo;s heritage tourism economy, through the installation of a rails-to-trails system, and the marketing of active mine-viewing areas to promote the ongoing efforts of the iron mining industry.&nbsp;</div>  <div><div class="wsite-image wsite-image-border-thin wsite-image-border-black" style="padding-top:10px;padding-bottom:10px;margin-left:0px;margin-right:0px;text-align:right"> <a> <img src="https://www.industriallandscapes.org/uploads/5/9/8/8/59888373/fig2_orig.jpg" alt="Picture" style="width:auto;max-width:100%" /> </a> <div style="display:block;font-size:90%">The Greenway Pit-Lake, located just west of Coleraine, MN</div> </div></div>  <div class="paragraph">&#8203;In rebranding the Mesabi Range as a recreational landscape, the Minnesota DNR also made use of the abundance of new surface waters. As open-pit mines were closed and abandoned, the pumps used to dewater them were shut off, creating a veritable landscape of water. Today, there are 250 more lakes in the Mesabi Range than existed in 1890. Called pit-lakes, these waterbodies are the result of open-pit mining and abandonment, and represent a hydrological contrast from the dereliction that often defines a post-mining landscape. By the late 1970s, the Minnesota DNR began <span>&#65279;</span>stocking<span>&#65279;</span> these lakes with trout, hoping to lure Midwestern anglers to the region with this new renewable resource. Although this fish-stocking program has been met with much success, these pit-lakes are currently managed by the DNR as natural resources rather than historic mines, blurring their cultural significance. Yet, the stocking of trout into these abandoned mines has also functioned as an unintentional form of landscape conservation and an innovative approach to adaptive re-use. <br />&#8203;Today, visitors in the Mesabi Range can fish for trout in abandoned mines, as well as scuba dive in the former chasms of the Sparta and Gilbert mines, collectively known as Lake Ore-Be-Gone (a tongue-in-cheek reference to the Garrsion Keillor&rsquo;s Lake Wobegon). At Lake Ore-Be-Gone, scuba divers can <span>&#65279;</span>explore<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_tFNcTeJ64w" target="_blank"><span>&#65279;</span></a> a number of out of place artifacts, including a helicopter, a bus, a pirate skeleton, and a WWII era military plane &ndash; adding a layer of confusion for future archaeologists. Although mining may have ceased, communities within these landscapes often persist, as do the environmental legacies of extraction. It is the responsibility of heritage managers to articulate to communities and to the broader public not just the features on the landscape that they have selectively memorialized, but also the abundance of environmental impacts that may have become obscured by either reclamation or heritage efforts. A chert awl in Arizona?<br />While I never have a quick answer to this question, what I do notice is that whatever my answer, the artifact is always something tangible, always something obviously human, and always rooted in technological materialism. I've been taught that an artifact is something mobile and something that was produced to serve some sort of purpose. Yet that is the orthodoxy of archaeology and heritage. &nbsp;What happens when we begin to challenge this convention?<br /><br />I was recently&nbsp;fortunate enough to visit some tremendous industrial heritage sites in Germany, the <a href="http://www.industriallandscapes.org/mining-landscapes/landschaftspark-duisburg-nord-germany" target="_blank">Landschaftspark</a> in Duisburg, and &nbsp;Zeche Zollverein in Essen. At both of these sites it is easy to become overwhelmed by their sheer grandeur, one centered around an enormous blast furnace works, the other centered around a towering coal mine shaft house. While I thoroughly enjoy these megaliths of industrial prosperity, what resonated with me most was a collection of artifacts housed in the Zeche Zollverein museum exhibit - appropriately called, "<strong>Environmental Destruction and Protection</strong>".</div>  <div>  <!--BLOG_SUMMARY_END--></div>  <div><div class="wsite-image wsite-image-border-thin wsite-image-border-black" style="padding-top:10px;padding-bottom:10px;margin-left:0px;margin-right:0px;text-align:center"> <a> <img src="https://www.industriallandscapes.org/uploads/5/9/8/8/59888373/published/img-1321.jpeg?1487174144" alt="Picture" style="width:auto;max-width:100%" /> </a> <div style="display:block;font-size:90%"></div> </div></div>  <div class="paragraph">Tucked away in a corner of the museum's 3rd level, the "Environmental Destruction and Protection" display contains jars and soil core samples filled with soils contaminated by industrial processes, and florence flasks containing polluted waters.<br />I've long believed that mine waste constituted an artifact (<em>although</em>&nbsp;<em>these are often called archaeological features - a semantic road we will not venture down in this blog post&nbsp;</em>), but I never really toyed with the idea of expanding the artifact categorization to include those less obvious products of human activity, things like <strong>contaminated soil</strong> and<strong> toxic water</strong>.&nbsp;<br /><br /><span>But why not? &nbsp;<br /><br />&#8203;Contaminated soils and polluted waters are products of industrial capitalism - some of the human made&nbsp;residuals left over from industrialization&nbsp;- comparable to a waste rock pile at a mine or a flake scatter at an&nbsp;indigenous camp. These are all the leftovers from a concerted effort by humans to create.&nbsp;<br /><br />&nbsp;So I ask: &nbsp;</span><br /><font size="5"><strong>Can contamination or pollution = artifact(s)? </strong>&nbsp;</font><br /><font size="4">and</font><br /><strong><font size="5">What new understandings of contamination could arise from archaeological interpretation?</font></strong></div>  <div><div class="wsite-image wsite-image-border-thin wsite-image-border-black" style="padding-top:10px;padding-bottom:10px;margin-left:0px;margin-right:0px;text-align:center"> <a> <img src="https://www.industriallandscapes.org/uploads/5/9/8/8/59888373/img-1325_orig.jpg" alt="Picture" style="width:auto;max-width:100%" /> </a> <div style="display:block;font-size:90%"></div> </div></div>  <div class="paragraph">The National Archives has produced an <a href="https://www.archives.gov/education/lessons/worksheets/artifact.html" target="_blank">artifact analysis</a> worksheet, which serves as a useful guide for interpreting an artifact that you might find in the field or be tasked with analyzing in a lab. &nbsp;<br />The questions on the worksheet follow the journalistic standard of knowing, asking:&nbsp;<em>Who, What, Where, When, Why, and How&nbsp;</em>the artifact in question came to be.<br /><br />But, more importantly the worksheet asks:&nbsp;<em><strong><font size="4">"</font></strong><span style="color:rgb(85, 85, 85)"><strong><font size="4">WHAT DOES THE ARTIFACT TELL US?"&nbsp;<br />&#8203;</font></strong></span></em><br />Explaining why an artifact matters to the public &nbsp;is the key task for an archaeologist.<br /><br /><span>About a decade ago, I remember coming across a massive can scatter in the Lake Tahoe region. I measured these cans, took photographs, and compared them to a handy artifact guide to determine their age. What I learned was that this pile of rusty metal was dumped there in the 1940s. Some folks had set up a camp, possibly for logging or railroad maintenance, and this was what they left behind. (Zeche Zollverein museum display)</strong></font></em></div>  <div class="paragraph">Industrial heritage, broadly, is the study of capitalism - looking specifically at the products that were produced (and left behind) from industrial scale processes.<br /><br />However, the primary focus of industrial heritage has been centered on two elements: the study and preservation of large industrial buildings and machines, and the promotion of historic industrial sites for tourism purposes. Both of these endeavors tend to celebrate nostalgia, and unintentionally promote the capitalist epistemologies that produced these places and things.<br /><br />&#8203;Neither approach acknowledges the sheer abundance of environmental destruction wrought by industry. In fact, it can be argued that the most ubiquitous and important product created from industrial capitalism is its environmental legacy. &nbsp;<br />So why not embrace contamination and pollution as meaningful artifacts of industry's past? The book is a collection of &nbsp;reflections on managing, developing, and revitalizing massive industrial landscapes after the gears of industry cease to grind. The book is filled with impressive images of reimagined industrial landscapes - a swimming pool in the middle of former colliery coking plant, a cheese cellar in an underground copper mine, and the development of a greenbelt across slag heaps in Northern France. This truly innovative work resonated with me, and this past month I had the opportunity to visit a handful of sites in the North-Rhine Westphalia region of northern Germany. This post is a collection of photographs from one of the most impressive industrial sites I've visited - The <a href="http://en.landschaftspark.de/the-park" target="_blank">Landschaftspark Duisburg Nord</a> located just outside of Duisburg. Chief among these was the Mesabi Range of northern Minnesota, a vast deposit of hematite and magnetic taconite ores stretching for over 100&nbsp;miles in length. Iron ore mining in the Mesabi Range involved three major phases: direct shipping ores (1893&ndash;1970s), washable ores (1907&ndash;1980s), and taconite (1947&ndash;current). Each phase of iron mining used different technologies to extract and process ore. Producing all of this iron yielded a vast landscape of mine waste. This paper uses a historical GIS to illuminate the spatial extent of mining across the Lake Superior Iron District, to locate where low-grade ore processing took place, and to identify how and where waste was produced. Our analysis shows that the technological shift to low-grade ore mining placed new demands on the environment, primarily around processing plants. Direct shipping ore mines produced less mine waste than low-grade ore mines, and this waste was confined to the immediate vicinity of mines themselves. These facilities were called beneficiation plants <span style="color:rgb(29, 33, 41)">(ben-eh-fiss-ee-ay-tion plants)</span>, iron ore concentrators, or ghost plants if you are&nbsp;referring to this blog. Historically, 88 beneficiation plants &nbsp;stretched across the Mesabi Range. Today 13 &nbsp;of these plants remain standing - but 2 weeks ago, I would have told you that there were 14. Time flies when you are having fun.</font></div>  <div class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"><font color="#1d2129">Coming up with these figures was a&nbsp;convoluted process. Since processing plants are not tracked by any government agency, and&nbsp;because most mining heritage sites tend to focus their attention more on the mines than the processing plants, &nbsp;pinpointing were these facilities once existed required quite a bit of archival legwork. This allows you to generate 'on the fly' overviews of whatever spatial extent you are examining. Aerial imagery used in ArcMap applications and Google Earth uses a collection of images taken at different times - times that might change as the scale or resolution of the area being examined is zoomed-in on, or zoomed-out of.&nbsp;</span></div>  <div class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"><font color="#1d2129"><strong>I've since been trying to&nbsp;find out exactly what happened to the Wacootah - but haven't had any luck.
